How to buy a silencer

How to Buy Your MMG Silencer — A Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Welcome to MMG Silencers. We know the NFA process can feel intimidating at first — but we've broken it down into simple, clear steps so you know exactly what to expect from the moment you choose your suppressor to the day it's in your hands.

The great news: as of January 1, 2026, the $200 federal tax stamp fee has been eliminated. The process is faster and more affordable than it has ever been.

STEP 1 — Place Your Order

Once you have selected your suppressor, place your order through our website. At checkout you will be asked to select a local FFL/SOT dealer near you for pickup. This is the licensed firearms dealer who will receive your suppressor and handle your paperwork.

Important: Your suppressor ships directly to your chosen dealer — not to your home. Federal law requires all NFA items to transfer through a licensed dealer.

If you do not have a preferred local dealer, we can help you find one in your area.

STEP 2 — Create Your ATF eForms Account

While your suppressor is on its way to your dealer, get ahead of the paperwork by setting up your ATF eForms account at eforms.atf.gov. You will need:

  • A valid email address
  • Basic personal information
  • A security question and PIN

This account is where your Form 4 application will be submitted and where you will receive updates on your approval status. Keep your login credentials handy — your dealer will need to access this with you.

STEP 3 — Decide: Individual or NFA Trust

Before submitting your paperwork you need to decide how to register your suppressor:

Individual Registration

  • Registered in your name only
  • Fastest approval — currently averaging 4 days with electronic filing
  • Only you may legally possess the suppressor
  • Family members or friends may not handle it without you present

NFA Gun Trust

  • A legal entity that holds the suppressor
  • All named trustees may legally possess the suppressor
  • Ideal for couples, families, or anyone who wants shared access
  • Simplifies passing the suppressor to heirs
  • Approval currently averages 18 days with electronic filing
  • Requires additional paperwork for each responsible person (fingerprints and photo)

Our recommendation for most buyers: Individual registration is the fastest and simplest option if you are the sole user.

STEP 4 — Suppressor Arrives at Your Dealer

Your MMG Silencer ships to your chosen dealer and is checked into their inventory. Your dealer will contact you — typically by phone or email — to schedule an appointment to complete your Form 4 paperwork.

Do not go to the dealer before they contact you. The suppressor must be logged into their system first.

STEP 5 — Complete Your eForm 4 With Your Dealer

This is the main paperwork step. You and your dealer will complete the ATF eForm 4 together — either in person at the dealer or remotely depending on your dealer's process.

What you will need at this appointment:

  • Your ATF eForms login, password, and PIN
  • A valid government-issued photo ID
  • A passport-style photo (many dealers take this on-site)
  • Fingerprints (digital scanner at most dealers, or ink cards)
  • Your NFA trust documents if registering under a trust
  • Your suppressor's serial number (your dealer will have this)

What happens at this step: Your dealer submits the eForm 4 electronically through ATF's portal. As of January 1, 2026, there is no tax payment — the $200 federal fee has been completely eliminated. You simply complete the form, certify it, and submit.

STEP 6 — Wait for ATF Approval

After submission you will receive an email confirmation from ATF that your Form 4 has been received. From there ATF processes your background check and application.

Current average wait times as of mid-2026:

  • Individual filing — approximately 4 days
  • Trust filing — approximately 18 days

These times represent a massive improvement over the previous process which could take 6–12 months. You can check your status anytime through your ATF eForms account or your dealer's customer portal.

While you wait: Some dealers will allow you to shoot your suppressor on their range while your Form 4 is pending. Ask your dealer if this is an option — you cannot take it home until approval is issued.

STEP 7 — Approval and Pickup

When your Form 4 is approved, ATF emails your dealer the digital tax stamp document. Your dealer will contact you to come in for pickup.

At pickup you will:

  • Complete an ATF Form 4473 (standard firearms transfer form)
  • Pass a NICS background check at the counter — same as buying any firearm
  • Receive your suppressor and your approved Form 4 / tax stamp document

Keep your approved Form 4 accessible whenever you are in possession of your suppressor. A digital copy on your phone is acceptable.

STEP 8 — Enjoy Your MMG Silencer

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I still need a tax stamp? You still receive a tax stamp as part of the approval — but as of January 1, 2026 it costs $0. The stamp is your proof of legal registration.

Can I take my suppressor to another state? Yes, with some restrictions. You may transport your suppressor across state lines as long as possession is legal in the states you are traveling through. Some states prohibit suppressors entirely — check local laws before traveling.

What if I already have a trust from a previous NFA purchase? You can add your new MMG Silencer to your existing trust. Contact your trust provider or attorney to add the item.

Can I let someone else use my suppressor? If registered individually — only in your presence. If registered under an NFA trust — any named trustee may possess it.
